Until very recently I did not know that a wrist distaff was something that I had always needed. I had seen pictures of spinners with a wooden distaff which appeared to be a ‘stick’ wound with fleece or flax which looked like candyfloss. One day I was wandering around online and came across pictures of beaded wrist distaffs. I was intrigued as when I read on this sounded like something that could be really useful. I enjoy spindle spinning and frequently spin out side in the open air which is fraught with danger on even the sunniest summer day as my roving flies around all over the place in even the slightest breeze. The wrist distaff ‘holds’ the roving securely in place whilst you spin and it looked easy enough to make with some rough, toothy yarn, a crochet hook and beads to weight ‘the tails’ slightly.
I am most likely to be found spinning fleece from primitive or rare breeds and my first spindle spun efforts were very rough and unevenly spun being North Ronaldsay plied with some Jacob and Manx Loaghtan. I had saved the yarn but never thought that I would be able to put it to good use, I unearthed some fairly weighty beads and started on my wrist distaff journey. Ingredients:- Several strands (4-8) of rough hand spun yarn about 8’ long Crochet hook Beads Method:-
